D'arenberg Custodian Grenache 2014
Rich blue-red. Hints of chocolate on the nose with juicy red berries and spices. Firm and dry on entry to the palate with a spicy almost peppery vibe. The tannins dissolve to reveal juicy fruit in the blueberry / black cherry spectrum although Cherrill in my row thought the fruit more like stewing strawberries for jam, when the strawberries become creamy before the sugar is added. In summary a concentrated fruit-driven style with little influence of oak and a delightful touch of milk chocolate emerging on the finish. From extremely low yielding old vines that d’Arry saved in the vine pull days – hence he is known as the Custodian of McLaren Vale Grenache.
